Bill Murray plays a smug, arrogant weatherman caught in a personal time-warp, who is continuously forced to relive the Punxsutawney, Penn., annual Groundhog Day event.
As tradition dictates, the groundhog's behavior is supposed to be indicative of the coming weather. The club also declared that Phil, the Punxsutawney groundhog, was America's only true weather-forecasting groundhog.
If it is sunny, the groundhog will see its shadow and head back inside - and winter will continue for another six weeks.
We'll have to wait for a famous groundhog in Pennsylvania to let us know if we will be seeing an early spring or six more weeks of cold winter temperatures. Since Feb. 2, 1887, this world-famous critter has been making his annual meteorological predictions with 100 percent accuracy* from his subterranean home on Gobbler's Knob in Punxsutawney, Pa. As Deeley puts it in the film, "Phil is everything to Punxsutawney". At first Murray revels at being able to act dishonorably without consequences, but he soon grows tired of having to wake up every morning to Sonny and Cher's "I Got You Babe" and facing the same day again and again. According to a report from NJ.com, Phil takes a potion known as the Groundhog punch every summer.
He lives with his wife, Phyllis, in a burrow at Barclay Square next to the Punxsutawney Memorial Library.
According to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club's website, on Candlemas Day, clergy would bless candles needed for the winter and hand them out.
Don't listen to the predictions of any of those impostor groundhogs out there, either! However, it was soon renamed Punxsutawney Phil after Britain's King Philip.
The tradition comes from Candlemas day in Europe. (Deeley points out to TIME that those fuel industries likely root for the furball's forecast to suggest a longer winter with more demand for heat.) And that relationship has been in the works for more than 100 years.
Does that mean winter is over? NO!
2 Critter competition: Phil isn't the only animal weather "man".
So, what are Phil's recent predictions? In fact, living close by in Quarryville Pennsylvania is Octoraro Orphie. They include Staten Island Chuck, General Beauregard Lee, Buckeye Chuck, Balzac Billy, Shubenacadie Sam and others.
