Over the course of two years, Google and Facebook wired $100 million to an imposter as victims of a long-con phishing attack, Fortune found. The scammer, who is 48-year-old Evaldas Rimasauskas, stated that he was an Asian manufacturer and was able to trick both companies from 2013 to 2015.

In March, the US Department of Justice published an indictment against a Lithuanian man, Evaldas Rimasauskas, for "orchestrating a fraudulent business email compromise scheme that induced two USA -based internet companies" to send more than $100 million to bank accounts in his control.

It has been reported that Both Google and Facebook were the victims of March's $100 million phishing scam.

The DOJ also accused Mr Rimasauskas of forging invoices, contracts and letters "that falsely appeared to have been executed and signed by executives and agents of the victim companies". "I do feel that we are lacking federal level breach disclosure laws that center around eliminating public vs. private or material vs. immaterial conditions".

The US Department of Justice confirmed the scam in March, saying that the two firms were tricked into wiring the money to the man. Google and Facebook confirmed on Friday that they were the companies affected. By the time they realised he was a scammer, he had $100 million in his account. "We recouped the funds and we're pleased this matter is resolved", a Google spokesperson told Fortune.

In 2015, the United States toy company Mattel was scammed out of $3m sent to a hacker's bank account in China, but fortunately it was a bank holiday when the transfer was made, so Chinese police in the province of Wenzhou and the bank in question were able to freeze the funds in time. Both companies eventually admitted that they were the unnamed victims in the case.

A spokesperson for Google said in statement that the company "detected this fraud against our vendor management team and promptly alerted the authorities", adding all stolen funds were later "recouped".

The story, as reported by The Guardian, shows that even the biggest technology companies in the world are not immune from the increasingly sophisticated attacks of online scammers.
