1 in 6 newlyweds' spouse is of different race or ethnicity

The Pew Research Center also found that Asians were the group most likely to marry outside of their race. Twenty-nine per cent of Asian newlyweds in 2015 were intermarried

The findings mark a social turnaround from 1967, when a mere 3 percent of new marriages was interracial.

The most dramatic increases have been among African-Americans, though black men are much more likely than black women to intermarry.

And the figures also reveal that 10 percent of all married people - in 2015 had a spouse of a different race or ethnicity.

In the past seven years, the amount of Americans saying interracial marriages are good for society has risen by 15 percent, according to a newly published study, but it's still not a majority opinion. Since 1980, the number of blacks who chose to marry someone of a different race or ethnicity rose from 5 percent to 18 percent. Eighteen percent of newlyweds in metropolitan areas were intermarried compared with 11 percent living elsewhere.

WASHINGTON-One in six American newlyweds married someone of a different race or ethnicity in 2015, a fivefold increase in the 50 years since the Supreme Court recognized a nationwide right to intermarriage, according to new data released Thursday by the Pew Research Center.

Interracial marriage became legal throughout the United States in 1967 when Richard and Mildred Loving took their case to the U.S. Supreme Court. The interactive map accompanying the report shows the huge variation in intermarriage rates across the U.S.by metro area. Those rates go up even higher for those born in the USA - to 46 percent for Asian newlyweds and 39 percent for Hispanic newlyweds. Thirty-eight percent of those in suburban areas say the same.

Pew researchers note that 50 years ago, only 3 percent of the people in the country were intermarried — that is, had spouses of a different race or ethnicity.

"The rapid increases in intermarriage rates for recently married whites and blacks have played an important role in driving up the overall rate of intermarriage in the U.S", the authors of the Pew analysis wrote.

Differences in racial composition of metropolitan and non-metropolitan populations may also account for some of the gap: 83 percent of newlyweds in non-metro areas are white, compared to 62 percent in metro areas.

The most common paring in the U.S.is Hispanics and whites.

Those cities' high degree of ethnic diversity likely contributes to interracial marriages, the report said.

Las Vegas and Santa Barbara follow a similar pattern. "But on the other hand, Jackson, Mississippi, is relatively diverse, there are relatively high shares of both whites and blacks in the marriage market, yet intermarriage is quite low there, at 3 percent", Livingston says.

Daniel Litchter, director of the Institute for the Social Sciences at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, told the Associated Press that the biggest reason for intermarriage is the growing diversity of the us population.
