Balch Springs Police Department Fires Officer Involved in Deadly Shooting

He acknowledged then that the vehicle was moving away from officers when Oliver fired the shots and said the officer's actions were not consistent with the department's "core values".

On Tuesday, the chief of the Balch Springs Police Department announced that he had fired the officer who used a rifle to shoot into a moving vehicle full of teenagers and killed Jordan Edwards, 15, as he was seated in the front passenger seat.

There was no reason for Balch Springs, Tex., officer Roy Oliver to open fire at a auto filled with teenagers trying to leave a party last Saturday, killing one of the passengers, and that's why he was sacked. Balch Springs police said officers responded to a report of intoxicated teenagers on a residential street in the 12300 block of Baron Drive Saturday night.

Haber said the department would continue to be transparent as the investigation into Oliver's actions progresses.

Jordan Edwards, a Black high school student, was leaving a house party with his two brothers and two other teenagers in a vehicle Saturday night when police arrived at the scene in response to a disturbance complaint and heard multiple gunshots in the house.

On Monday, Haber said body camera footage showed the vehicle was driving forward, away from the officers - not reversing toward them.

Edwards's family, meanwhile, wants Oliver arrested for murder, according to a statement put out Tuesday by a lawyer for the family, Lee Merritt. Police chief Jonathan Haber said the decision was made after discoveries were made during the internal investigation.

In a statement, the Edwards family said there "remains a long road ahead".

Merritt said the officer should be treated like "any other citizen who commits a crime"- and therefore should have been arrested by now.

An attorney for Jordan's family, Lee Merritt, told NBC News that Jordan's older brother, who was in the vehicle, was handcuffed and held overnight.

The Dallas County District Attorney's Office's Public Integrity Unit includes a specialized group of experienced attorneys and investigators. He was shot in the back of the head as his 16-year-old brother was driving away from the house.

"We are declaring war on bad policing", he said as Jordan's parents sat silently beside him, wiping their eyes with tissues and gazing downwards. Oliver shot his rifle at the auto striking and killing Edwards through the passenger's side window.

Earlier in the day, Edwards' family said their only desire is is to seek justice in the teen's death.

"On behalf of the entire Balch Springs Police Department and the city of Balch Springs we express our honest condolences with the family", Haber said.

Edwards family spokesperson Mercedes Jackson said the initial reports that the boys were backing up toward police "in an aggressive manner" unfairly portrayed the children.

The brother who was driving pulled over and tried to motion to police for help, she said.

"The bond that he shared with his family, particularly his siblings, was indescribable", his family said in a statement. "Their young lives will forever be altered".

"We reached out to the family".

Haber did not detail how the officer's actions violated policy.
