BC election brings uncertainty for business sector, pipelines

If Clark can't maintain the confidence of the legislature, Guichon could invite the opposition parties to attempt to form their own government-or she could dissolve the legislature and drop the writ on a new election. He insisted throughout that he was willing to work with either main party, although the bitterness between him and NDP leader John Horgan was on display many times during Weaver's four years as a lone Green MLA.

While Clark's promise of a booming liquefied natural gas industry has not materialized over the past four years, Clark was able to point to BC's strong economy as proof of the Liberals' financial savvy.

By the end of the night, the B.C. Liberals had 43 seats, one shy of the number needed for a majority government.

But Hickey says forming a coalition government with the Liberals could still be advantageous for the Greens.

"The game's not over, there's still 176,000 seconds left on the clock, and I'm going to wait and see what the final outcome was", Horgan said referring to the approximate 176,000 absentee ballots that won't be counted until May 24.

"This is what we do know: a majority of British Columbians voted for a new government and I believe that's what they deserve", he said.

"I'm 35 and I ran for this party for the future and the children, and my yet to be conceived children, so I'm still hoping that we pull through".

Weaver said the Greens are open to talking to both the Liberals and New Democrats about governing, but until the votes are counted it's too early to discuss political deals.

The legislative minority means the tiny Green party will hold the balance of power as Premier Christy Clark tries to push forward with pipeline expansion plans and a promise to apply a levy to thermal coal exports to the USA in retaliation for United States duties on softwood lumber.

"Tonight we won the popular vote", she said. The NDP, whose strength appeared to be in the Lower Mainland, saw its share of the vote here slip slightly while the Greens increased their share of the vote substantially.

The B.C. Liberals are the party that approved the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion, which is set to start construction in the fall.

Horgan said that the NDP and the Green Party can work on that initiative in the legislature. Under the watch of Clark, a former radio host who's governed for six years, BC has led Canada in job creation and posted a budget surplus for five consecutive years.

At the very least, Weaver could ask Clark to agree to two of his election platforms: outlaw political contributions from unions and corporations; and hold a referendum on electoral reform.

The SFU prof noted with a minority government, Weaver (or Horgan) could "make a big production" on the Kinder Morgan file, and ask for more studies to be conducted, looking at such things like the Water Act or Haida Gwaii issues.

UPDATE: This story does not account for the fact that these are provisional totals, and do not include absentee ballots. And we have also won the most seats. British Columbians were sold a good on LNG.

The Liberals have promised to put together an expert committee to advise the government on how the current, unregulated political donation system can be improved.

It's not easy being Green on British Columbia's political scene - especially for a party facing a hard choice in who it might back in a minority government.
