Bill O'Reilly: Hatred Toward Roger Ailes Was What 'Killed Him'

Roger Ailes, former chief executive of Fox News, the powerful cable news channel for conservatives that helped reshape the USA political landscape, has died at age 77.

"I am profoundly sad and heartbroken to report that my husband, Roger Ailes, passed away this morning", widow Elizabeth Ailes said in a statement Thursday. Even Rev. Al Sharpton - who was in many ways the opposite of everything Ailes stood for - paid tribute to him and said, "his impact on United States culture is undeniable".

Last summer, former Fox News host Gretchen Carlson sued Ailes for sexual harassment.

"Fox News Chairman Rupert Murdoch hailed the network's founder, Roger Ailes, as a brilliant broadcaster" who "will be remembered by both sides of the camera" in a memo to staffers obtained by TheWrap. With its slogan "Fair & Balanced", the network grew into not just the cable news ratings leader but a profound influence on the right wing of American politics.

Before founding Fox News, Ailes served as a political consultant to Bush and other Republican presidents.

After leaving the company he reportedly helped Donald Trump prepare for the debates during his presidential campaign. Ailes vehemently denied them.

Ailes' career in television began in Cleveland and Philadelphia, where he started as Property Assistant (1962), Producer (1965), and Executive Producer (1967-68) for KYW-TV.

News of Ailes' death prompted widespread expressions of shock and grief from numerous political, entertainment and media figures.

His ouster set off a chain of events that led to the departure of Fox News anchor Bill O'Reilly earlier this year under similar circumstances, forcing Fox to bring in an independent law firm to investigate harassment at the network.

Our thoughts and prayers now turn to him, his Wife Beth, his son Zachary, his brother and his family. Fox News still sits in the number one position for cable news at this writing. "Many people out there would say he saved this country by starting the Fox News Channel", Earhardt said.

In 1996, Ailes helped launch Fox News, which dramatically changed the media landscape.

So, it seems like no coincidence that when Ailes died Thursday morning, his widow snubbed Fox News and gave the scoop to the Drudge Report.

"When stuff hit the fan, as it will when you are doing daily political commentary in a polarized nation, Roger had my back", he wrote.

Ailes was famous for his shrewd leadership of Fox, including his focus on airing conservative opinions and hiring anchors and reporters with big personalities.
