The TV star, who was best-known for his time as a 'Blue Peter' presenter, had suffered from Alzheimer's Disease.

His family said he died peacefully in his sleep on Sunday morning and that they hoped Noakes would be remembered for "his many escapades with his faithful companion Shep" during his time on the BBC show.

She said: "John Noakes, died peacefully on Sunday morning May 28th".

Noakes had been suffering from Alzheimer's and his release from the illness "must be counted as a blessing", a family friend said.

His many stunts included a number of parachute jumps, climbing Nelson's Column without a safety harness and taking part in a bobsleigh run.

Noakes served as a host on the flagship BBC children's programme from 1965 to 1978, where he became a viewer favourite due to his daredevil antics and his friendly relationship with the show's dog, Shep.

Noakes was also present for the greatest "blooper" in Blue Peter history - the 1969 edition when Lulu the elephant was brought into the studio during a live broadcast and disgraced herself.

Gethin Jones, who presented Blue Peter for three years from 2005, was among many of Noakes' successors to pay tribute to the star.

However, Noakes claimed that his on-screen manner was all a "persona" that he could hide behind: "Idiot Noakes has an extrovert personality, is light-hearted and jokey". Zoe Salmon added: "I am deeply saddened to hear about John Noakes, a Blue Peter legend who will live on in our hearts".

Born in Shelf, Yorkshire, Noakes had trained as an aircraft engine fitter before moving into television.

"John Noakes - the first public figure I ever admired, and possibly the last". John Noakes meant so much to so many of us.

Noakes was in the news in 2015 after he went missing from his home in Majorca for more than eight hours.

He also hit out at the show's editor, saying: "Biddy Baxter was an very bad woman".

Noakes reunited with his former co-presenters for Blue Peter anniversary celebrations, including the time capsule dig in 2000.
