British PM May says June election result 'not certain'

Speaking to the Guardian, he said: "If the United Kingdom, after the election, wants to withdraw Article 50, then the procedure is very clear".

Corbyn was elected party leader in 2015 and again past year thanks to strong backing from grassroots Labour members, but many of his more centrist MPs believe he can not secure the broad public support needed to win power.

Guy Verhofstadt said Theresa May's decision to call a poll on 8 June - having previously said she would not go to the country before the end of the parliament in 2020 - appeared to have been driven by political opportunism.

Some Conservative supporters might think this election is done and dusted - a blue victory in the bag.

"The deal we get will be vital for our future as a country so this is the time to get behind our strong Prime Minister and let her deliver the best outcome for Britain", said the Tory who has been South West Surrey's MP since 2005.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn has issued a rallying cry to voters in his first keynote speech since PM Theresa May called a snap election on Tuesday, calling the vote a battle between "the establishment and the people". "I don't play by their rules and if a Labour government is elected on June 8 we won't play by their rules" either, he said to loud cheers from the audience gathered in Westminster on Thursday afternoon.

In a speech in London, he will say that Labour will fight on behalf of Britain's "true wealth creators" and overturn a "rigged system" which favours rich individuals and businesses. "And Labour in this election will be part of a movement of the British people to make that change".

He dodged a question about whether Labour might back a second referendum on the final Brexit deal secured by May, stressing only that he wanted continued economic ties with the EU.

The Labour leader also positioned himself against making cuts to corporation tax as mulled by the Conservative government.

Theresa May has insisted the result of the snap General Election is "not certain" despite polls putting the Conservatives as many as 24 points ahead of Labour.

"A second referendum is not our policy and it won't be in our manifesto", Corbyn's spokesperson said. May is not only keen to win her own mandate but also to be less at the mercy of her party's anti-EU right-wing when it comes to parliamentary votes.

Controversial business figures like Mike Ashley of Sports Direct, Sir Philip Green, Southern Rail and tax-avoiding multinationals should be "worried" about the prospect of a Labour government, said Mr Corbyn.
