Buccaneers agree to deal with free-agent QB Ryan Fitzpatrick

Bucs 2017 success lies on Jameis Winston's shoulders

Looking at the Bucs depth chart at the quarterback position, signing Fitzpatrick fills a major need considering the players the team had sitting behind Jameis Winston.

A year ago, Ryan Fitzpatrick was embroiled in a standoff with the New York Jets that was among the bigger summer National Football League storylines.

At this stage in his career, Fitzpatrick is a seasoned backup. After a successful 2015 season, where he led the Jets to a 10-6 record, Fitzpatrick struggled in 2016, throwing for only 2,710 yards, with 12 TD and 17 interceptions, in 11 starts, and was temporarily replaced by Bryce Petty as Jets' starting quarterback.

After being drafted by the St. Louis Rams in 2005, he played in Cincinnati, Buffalo, Tennessee and Houston before signing with the Jets before the 2015 season. In 12 starts, he completed 59.4% of his passes for 1,905 yards, eight touchdowns and nine interceptions. He became a free agent following the season and signed a three-year deal with the Bills, where he took over as the starter for an injured Trent Edwards at midseason.

Fitzpatrick is coming off a season he likely wants to forget.

Alabama Crimson Tide tight end O.J. Howard (88) scores a touchdown during the third quarter against the Clemson Tigers in the 2017 College Football Playoff National Championship Game at Raymond James Stadium.

We shouldn't forget that the Buccaneers also added the explosive DeSean Jackson via free agency. If history repeats itself, that means he'll start at least one of the Bucs' games this season. They eventually agreed to a one-year deal, and Fitzpatrick proved it was in fact a flash in the pan year.
