Bundesliga signs up first woman referee for next season

Since 2011, Steinhaus has served in Bundesliga 2 matches and also officiated the USA women's national team vs Japan in the 2012 Olympic gold medal match.

The 38-year-old, who also works as a police officer, and is dating Howard Webb, has been predominantly officiating lower league games.

Bibiana Steinhaus is one of four new Bundesliga referees that the presidency of the DFB (German football association) signed off at a meeting at the DFB's headquarters on Friday.

"When he informed me in our telephone call about the decision of the referee's commission, I was quite speechless".

In an interview published on the German soccer federation's website, Steinhaus says she feels "disbelief, delight, joy, relief, curiosity".

"It has always been my dream to be active as a referee in the Bundesliga".

"For us all, it's a dream has come true".

DFB president Reinhard Grindel said: "Hopefully the first female referee in the Bundesliga is an incentive for many young girls in this country to try to emulate her". Certainly, as a referee, I am under special scrutiny at the beginning of the season - even through the media.
