An agreement to construct the third stage of India's Kudankulam nuclear power plant is expected by year end, said Russian President Vladimir Putin on Wednesday.

Taking the plunge and entering the Nuclear Suppliers Group, the Modi government has announced its plan to develop 10 heavy water nuclear reactors.

"The 10 new units will come up in a fleet mode as a fully homegrown initiative".

Another 6700 MW of nuclear power is expected to be added by 2021-22 when now under-construction projects go onstream in Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Tamil Nadu. A week ago, despite trouble with American suppliers over liability issues and French suppliers over pricing, it was warning Russian Federation, the nation's biggest supplier of nuclear power generation technology and equipment, to do more to convince China that India, as a peaceful nuclear power user, must find a place in the NSG.

The minister said the ten reactors to be installed for the nuclear power will have a state-of-art technology meeting the highest standards of safety. But most of the reactors have lower capacity.

Modi tweeted: "A vital decision of the Cabinet that pertains to transformation of the domestic nuclear industry".

The country is setting up new goals to increase its renewable power generation including a plan to add 100,000 megawatts of solar power by 2022.

The planned nuclear units will generate business worth $11bn (£8.48bn) and create more than 33,000 jobs, the government said. These reactors use natural uranium as fuel and heavy water as both moderator and coolant.

The prime minister's office said that the approval marks a statement of strong belief in the capability of India's scientific community to build its technological capacities.

It also supports India's commitment to sustainable development, energy self-sufficiency and bolsters global efforts to combat climate change. It underscores the mastery our nuclear scientists have attained over all aspects of indigenous PHWR technology. "India's record of building and operating PHWR reactors over the last almost 40 years is globally acclaimed", he added.
