Can Google make virtual reality less lonely?

Google also announced that it will be launching two low-priced virtual reality (VR) headsets made by HTC and Lenovo for it Daydream VR platform.

Google has announced that it has partnered to develop two virtual reality headsets that will work as standalone devices. In its latest move aimed at taking the world of VR by storm, Google has introduced an all-new standalone VR headset, set to rival the offerings made by rivals HTC and Oculus. With this new effort, however, you won't even need to worry about slipping your smartphone into a "dumb" headset like the Daydream View - everything needed to complete the VR experience will be self-contained.

The headset is based around a positional tracking system Google calls WorldSense, which Bavor claimed uses only a handful of internal sensors to provide accurate positioning information for room-scale virtual reality.

Google's annual developer conference, the Google I/O, witnesses the release of some of the biggest technological breakthroughs in technology. Google has presented its new standalone headset, which will feature Daydream powered by dedicated chipsets and sensors.

New smartphones that will support Daydream include the Samsung Galaxy S8 and S8+, which will get the required software update this summer. They are free-form and wireless, yet still capable of providing full 360 degree tracking using what Google calls WorldSense. This way you will be able to jump into VR without being disconnected from the world if you so wish.

Vive's headset is coming "later this year".

I've shared some more thoughts about virtual and augmented reality over on Medium. Google VP for VR, Clay Bavor announced the next flagship of LG will support the Google VR headset. It's meant to be an indoor alternative to Global Positioning System and is now being trialled in select Lowe's stores and museums. This will allow users to make the most of the VR experience in places that were previously off limits due to space limitations.
