CBS plans big Thursday night with "Young Sheldon", "SWAT"

Iain Armitage plays the character, who in the mothership series is portrayed by Jim Parsons. Also the humour is pretty much gag free, and seems to lean more on the sentimental side of things, which is drastically different from Big Bang's (and creator Chuck Lorre's) take on things.

Perhaps the most surprising thing about this show is that it ditches the three-camera set-up and laugh track of its parent series and goes full single-camera.

Big Bang Theory spinoff "The Young Sheldon" is nearing closer, with CBS releasing the first trailer for the show.

The show focuses on Sheldon Cooper, physicist in "The Big Bang Theory", at age 9. They brought in a ringer to direct the pilot - Iron Man's Jon Favreau, who also gets an executive producer credit.

But will a move like that actually encourage people who don't like The Big Bang Theory to give this show a chance? Perry is the daughter of actress Laurie Metcalf, who plays Sheldon's mom on "Big Bang Theory".

Young Sheldon will premiere with a special preview on Monday, September 25 at 8:30/7:30c before moving to its regular time Thursdays at 8:30/7:30c after The Big Bang Theory on November 2.

Honestly, I would love nothing more than to learn that this series is an honest and amusing look at growing up different in a corner of the country where "different" is often despised. High school is hard for everyone, but it's going to be even harder for a rules-loving nine-year-old who knows he's smarter than everyone around him and says whatever he's thinking. It returns this fall, but CBS has already started to branch out with a spinoff that already received a series order in March.
