Central Intelligence Agency creates dedicated mission center for North Korea

North Korea, in response, has increased its missile tests and even hinted at a new nuclear test in the coming weeks.

A Downing Street spokesman said the two leaders vowed to remain "close partners" on issues including defence and security.

The South Korean intelligence service said the charge was "groundless". They agreed the bilateral relationship would continue to go from strength to strength.

Pompeo said during a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing that he created the center to "draw the best minds, the most innovative, create people from across our agency".

In 2015, the Central Intelligence Agency created 10 mission centers in a modernization effort to break down the "stove-piping" of its different operations. Mission is calling what it says was a "terrorist" plot by the US and South Korean intelligence agencies to kill leader Kim Jung Un a "declaration of war". The administration has said, however, that it wants China to use its leverage over North Korea to reach a diplomatic solution to the crisis.

"The Central Intelligence Agency of the USA and the Intelligence Service (IS) of south Korea, hotbed of evils in the world, hatched a vicious plot to hurt the supreme leadership of the DPRK and those acts have been put into the extremely serious phase of implementation after crossing the threshold of the DPRK", the North's KCNA news agency quoted the statement as saying, referring to the North by its official name, the Democratic People's Republic of Korea.

The creation of the centre focuses the CIA's efforts against the "serious threats" emerging from North Korea, which has ramped up both nuclear and missile tests in an effort to enhance its military capabilities, CIA Director Mike Pompeo said.

As KCNA announced the allegations last week, it also said North Korea was embarking on a campaign to root out suspected foreign agents.

A veteran Central Intelligence Agency operations officer has been selected as the new Assistant Director for Korea and will preside over the Mission Centre, an official release said.

"We have dedicated a very significant amount of our intelligence resources to the issue of North Korea".

He added that the announcement of the center, coinciding with the election of a less-hardline South Korean President who is likely to pursue at least some form of diplomacy with Seoul's belligerent neighbor to the north, was "interesting".

Since, then North Korea has made less news, as war no longer appears imminent.

Advising Americans on the risks involved in traveling to North Korea, Adams noted the brutality of the DPRK's legal system.
