Chaffetz to resign, raising doubts about Trump probe

House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Rep. Jason Chaffetz R Utah speaks Capitol Hill in Washington. Chaffetz says he will resign from Congress

A top Utah state lawmaker has said U.S. Rep. Jason Chaffetz may leave office by the end of June, a move that would call into question the future of the House Oversight Committee's investigation of President Donald Trump and his campaign's ties with Russian Federation.

House Oversight and Government Reform Chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, says he will leave office on June 30.

It is unclear if there is an immediate cause for Chaffetz's expected announcement. They have worked hard to serve our constituents and have made me look good too many times to mention.

Saudi Arabia is making every effort to dazzle and impress President Donald Trump on his first overseas trip.

On Tuesday, Chaffetz sent a letter to the FBI asking for files that could prove that fired FBI Director James Comey documented an attempt by President Trump to dissuade him from investigating former National Security Advisor Michael Flynn.

Washingtonian reported last week that Chaffetz has been telling fellow House Republicans that he will join Fox News, possibly as soon as July.

Chaffetz's committee has a hearing set for next Wednesday, and he said he would like Comey to testify.

Liberals said that he did not go after the incoming administration with almost the vigor used against the prior Democratic administration.

Chaffetz's letter announcing his resignation did not mention the investigation, focusing exclusively on his decision about wanting to spend more time with family.

TPM also notes that Chaffetz's oversight zeal with regards to Comey has waxed and waned.

In response to The New York Times report on those memos, Chaffetz demanded copies from the Federal Bureau of Investigation of all of Comey's records related to conversations with Trump by next week and threatened to subpoena the records if necessary. "There's always a laundry list of literally hundreds of types of investigations that are going on", Chaffetz said.

At first, the leading theory was that Chaffetz wanted to run for the Utah governor's seat in 2020.

Gowdy ran the House Select Committee on the investigation into the State Department's handling of the 2012 terrorist attack in Benghazi.

Some of the leading contenders to replace Chaffetz as House Oversight chair are former Freedom Caucus Chairman Jim Jordan (R-Ohio), Rep. Jimmy Duncan (R-Tenn.) and Rep. Mike Turner (R-Ohio). On Thursday, Gowdy released a statement saying he was talking to other members about the chairmanship.
