Comey's firing unleashes uncertainty in Washington

The article specified how President Trump, the White House Press Department and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appear to be at odds over who exactly called for Comey's firing.

A combination photo shows U.S. President Donald Trump (L) and former FBI Director James Comey. Trump discussed firing Comey with Vice President Pence, White House counsel Don McGahn and his son-in-law and aide Jared Kushner in recent days.

"He'd lost confidence in Director Comey and, frankly, he'd been considering letting Director Comey go since the day he was elected", Sanders said at a press conference on Wednesday. That the FBI director leading the Russian Federation investigation has now been fired right in the middle of it. "It's an excuse by the Democrats for having lost an election that they should have won.' And the reason they should have won it is the electoral college is nearly impossible for a Republican to win".

But there are new concerns about how Comey's role in overseeing the investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible collusion with the Trump campaign affected the president's decision.

Mr. Comey learned of his abrupt firing from a television news broadcast, while at a law-enforcement event in Los Angeles.

In a letter to Federal Bureau of Investigation associates, Comey said, "I have long believed that a president can fire an Federal Bureau of Investigation director for any reason, or no reason at all". Comey, taken by surprise, at first thought it was a joke.

In an emotional farewell letter to his staff released on May 10, Comey heartbreakingly told of how he's going to miss the mission they were on to bring justice.

The White House emails a statement to reporters announcing Comey's removal. CNN portrayed the career Justice Department official as an "unlikely hatchet man", which left some wondering if he acted on his own or on the White House's orders.

"While I greatly appreciate you informing me, on three separate occasions, that I am not under investigation", Trump wrote.

He also agreed to refrain from updating the White House on the investigation.

Comey concluded: "Working with you has been one of the great joys of my life".

Senator Mark Warner, the senior Democrat on the committee, said: "It's hard to avoid the conclusion that the President's decision to remove Director Comey was related to this investigation and that is truly unacceptable". "One that he said goes against the tradition of prosecutors at every level".

"We don't think it's necessary", said White House spokesman Sarah Huckabee Sanders.
