Cornyn wise to withdraw his name

Senate Democrats are demanding that Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein name a special prosecutor for an investigation into Russia's influence in the 2016 USA presidential elections before moving forward with Comey's replacement. John Cornyn is a former judge who may be itching for a new opportunity, and he likely would sail through a confirmation process that might trip up other contenders.

If he had been chosen, it would have created political upheaval in Texas with both parties fighting for his Senate seat. "I spoke briefly with Attorney General Sessions Saturday when I returned and again this afternoon".

On Sunday, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell declined to put his weight behind his top deputy, instead pushing another potential candidate, Merrick Garland, who was former President Barack Obama's Supreme Court pick before the majority leader led an effort to scuttle his nomination previous year. Sen.

"John Cornyn under normal circumstances would be a superb choice to be Federal Bureau of Investigation director", Graham said Sunday on Meet the Press.

A commencement address by the number two Senate Republican and candidate for FBI Director was canceled Friday after opposition from students at the historically black university where he was scheduled to speak. South Carolina Rep. Trey Gowdy took himself out of consideration on Monday. The former Republican senator from Alabama sharply criticized Cornyn's bipartisan effort previous year to overhaul the nation's criminal justice system and revise some 1980s and '90s-era federal "tough on crime" laws.

"I think the likelihood of Republican defections for Cornyn is really low", Mackowiak said.

One source said that Trump favored Cornyn for the post.

Cornyn would be less exciting to tea partiers, though his partisan credentials are impeccable.

NPR reported Tuesday that Judge Merrick Garland, a novelty candidate for the post suggested by Utah senator Mike Lee and endorsed by Senate majority leader Mitch McConnell, has no intention to leave the bench.

"I believe Senator Cornyn would do a great job in anything he is asked to do", Hutchison said in a statement.

So, what would Cornyn's response have been had President Barack Obama fired Comey in the midst of investigating the Democratic nominee for president?
