You must be registered by 11.59pm on Monday, May 22, in order to take part in the June 8 election.

You do not need to do this if you were registered to vote at the European Union referendum, and you have not changed address.

Even so, hundreds of thousands of eligible overseas voters did not register to vote last year - and more than one-million others could not do so due to the "15-year rule" which bans voting after 15 years abroad.

Voters are signing up in their droves to have their say in the general election next month.

You will need your National Insurance number and, if you're a British citizen living overseas, your passport as well.

You'll need to fill in your full name, date of birth, address, details of recent addresses, nationality and your National Insurance Number - which you can find on payslips or tax/benefits/pensions letters. If you will be unable to cast your vote in person on June 8, you can apply for a postal or proxy vote. Make sure you keep in mind to sign and put your date of birth on your postal vote statement and include it with your postal vote when returning it.

You can also register by post.

Vote, you Nigel. Even if it isn't a popular choice, just vote.

In the run-up to the general election, The Gazette will be profiling the candidates standing in local constituencies.

In a few weeks, Britain will hold its second general election in two years - and time is running out to register to vote and make your voice heard.
