An even bigger shock occurred as world No. 3 Stan Wawrinka - who has endured a nightmare build-up to the second Grand Slam of the year - lost to big-serving American John Isner 6-7 (1-7) 4-6.

The first set was close, decided by one one break in game 7 (Roberto had the opportunity to pull it back immediately in the following game but Novak saved that break point) and Djokovic extended his lead with an early break in game 3 of the second set.

Murray's best performance was winning the Dubai title in February, but he looks to be struggling to replicate the blistering displays that carried him to the number one spot at the end of a year ago.

However, he regained his composure and found a way through and will now face either Kei Nishikori or Juan Martin del Potro in the quarter-finals, with several high-profile stars already into the last-eight.

"It's a situation for me where I'm going out there against the No. 3 player in the world. That's what happened today".

Fognini had ridden the crowd support to a victory over No. 1 Andy Murray earlier in the tournament, but could not pose much of a challenge to the 20-year-old German.

Bautista Agut could have gone 5-4 up in the second set after Djokovic appeared to send the ball long but the umpire said it was in.

Djokovic drew first blood with a break for 4-3 in the opening set.

"When you lack confidence and rhythm, against opponents like (Benoit) Paire and Isner, it s not ideal", said Wawrinka, who had beaten Frenchman Paire 6-3, 6-4 on Wednesday.

Milos Raonic will take on Alexander Zverev after seeing off Tomas Berdych and Fabio Fognini respectively, while Marin Cilic dumped David Goffin, who was struggling with injury, out of the event.

Konta had won her previous three meetings against Williams but the American dominated the first set. "It's one of my favorite places on earth, so that's one of the reasons why I have always come here". The Czech next faces eighth-seeded Elina Svitolina, who recovered to beat Mona Barthel 3-6, 6-0, 6-0. Kontaveit beat 16th-seeded Mirjana Lucic-Baroni 6-1, 6-1 to set up a quarterfinal against Madrid Open champion Simona Halep.

Australian Daria Gavrilova beat former finalist and 10th seed Madison Keys 2-6, 7-5, 7-5, while Dutch 15th seed Kiki Bertens put out Monica Niculescu of Romania 2-6, 6-2, 6-1.
