Donald Trump warns James Comey over 'leaks' in explosive Twitter rant

The Republican chairman of the Senate panel, Richard Burr, asked McCabe whether he ever heard Comey tell Trump the president was not the subject of investigation.

"What I did was I was going to fire Comey". "There's no good time to fire, by the way".

Thanks to this supposedly high bar, Trump suggested it might be worthwhile to call off all future White House press briefings and instead hand out written responses to make sure they are accurate.

Fuller, who served in the FBI for 30 years, says he doesn't doubt that Trump would have asked, but there are also long-standing White House policies in place that limit contact with the Justice Department on active investigations.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.: "Mr. Rosenstein recommended Mr. Comey's removal".

"My gut reaction? No way would Comey ever tell him that". "He's not my man", he said. Surely, they argue, Comey would have known better. Multiple officials, including Pence, said the president was acting at the behest of Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Sessions.

Gomez said. "I'm sure that kind of question would have made Mr. Comey very uncomfortable and he would have avoided being specific". I had several conversations with him, but I didn't ask that question directly: "'Had you already made that decision?' I went off of the information that I had when I answered your question". The intelligence community last fall issued a declassified report outlining the Kremlin's motives and methods in seeking to tilt the election in Trump's favor. On Capitol Hill, acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe strongly disputed the White House's assertion that Comey had been fired in part because he had lost the confidence of the FBI's rank-and-file.

Mr Trump followed his apparent warning to Mr Comey with another tweet referring to former national intelligence chief, James Clapper.

Four: The previous day, the White House called the Russian Federation probe a minor matter - Sanders called it one of the smallest things on the FBI's plate. A handful of names began circulating in the news media while GOP lawmakers and Trump supporters privately suggested potential picks.

"The FBI has been in turmoil", Trump told Holt. "You know that, I know that, everybody knows that". "It hasn't recovered from that".

McCabe testified it was not typical practise to tell a person they are not a target of an investigation.

While the administration downplayed the threat, a senior administration official acknowledged that the White House had been misled about the role of the Russian photographer, who was actually employed by a state-run news agency.

Trump also doubled down on his denials of Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

The nominee must be confirmed by the US Senate. Trump said in a series of Tweets Friday.

In contrast to the president's spokespeople, Mr McCabe said: "Director Comey enjoyed broad support within the Federal Bureau of Investigation and still does to this day".

Mr Comey chose to announce there would be no investigation because, the letter says, "he believed Attorney General Loretta Lynch had a conflict".

Sanders said the president did not violate any laws, rules or protocols between the West Wing and the Justice Department governing inquiries about ongoing investigations, even investigations tied to a president.

"The challenge they have is that the president sometimes moves so rapidly that they don't get a team around that gets it organized", said Newt Gingrich, the former House speaker and a Trump ally.
