Emma Watson wins MTV's first gender-neutral acting nod

Beauty and the Beast was the Movie of the Year, with its star, Emma Watson, the Best Actor in a Movie.

The award came about after the cable network chose to eliminate gender classifications for its Movie & TV Awards, which were handed out Sunday night in Los Angeles.

Especially important regarding the presentation of the award was who announced Watson as the victor: Asia Kate Dillon, who is the first gender non-binary identifying actor to have a role in a major television series (Billions, Orange Is The New Black). I think I'm being given this award for a performance as an actor, but it doesn't feel like that what it's really for, although I am very grateful if you did think that I did a good job because the whole singing part of the situation was pretty terrifying-yeah, not kidding about that part!

Emma said and added that MTV's move to create a genderless award for acting will mean something different to everyone.

The ceremony also was noteworthy for the way it nominated actors from both TV shows and movies in the same category.

Emma Watson picked up the award for Best Actor in a Movie for the live action adaptation of the Disney Musical and in a passionate acceptance speech, she noted the universal message her character Belle had to offer. Emma also thanked Asia Kate Dillion who played the first non-binary character on TV for presenting her with the award. "And that doesn't need to be separated into two categories".

"Women will now win a lot less awards because they've made them gender-neutral and there are more male actors, so actually in trying to get equality you end up with more inequality".

A new award, Best Fight Against the System, went to the film Hidden Figures, which tells the story of a team of African-American women mathematicians who served a vital role at NASA during the space program's early years. "I love playing someone who didn't listen to any of that". That award show is as stuffy as it gets, and has-time and again-proven that it's resistant to change and the evolving tastes of the film audience.

The Trending award was won by Run the World (Girls) feat.
