Emmanuel Macron inaugurated as France President

PARIS — Emmanuel Macron was inaugurated Sunday as France's new president at the Elysee Palace in Paris, and immediately launched into his mission to shake up French politics, world economics and the European Union.

Macron, 39, is the youngest president in France's history.

Those who believe that the open borders, closer European ties and business-friendly reforms are the key to prosperity and peace were relieved when he won a run-off vote against far-right candidate Marine Le Pen a week ago with 66 percent of the vote.

The former investment banker who had never even contested an election before was then proclaimed president by Laurent Fabius, president of the Constitutional Council. Macron's direct predecessor Francois Hollande, a self-styled "Normal President", meanwhile came under fire for paying almost 10,000 euros a month to his hairdresser.

Mr Macron's party said the "dream team" had arrived at the Elysee Palace.

During the ceremony, Macron will sign the investiture, receive the insignia of the Legion of Honour and deliver an inaugural speech.

Security will be tight with around 1,500 police officers deployed near the presidential palace and the nearby Champs Elysees avenue and surrounding roads will be blocked off.

Macron met numerous candidates gathered at a Paris museum on Saturday and told them they had an "immense responsibility".

Traditionally, Hollande will meet successor on the red carpet before entering the Elysee Palace in the heart of the French capital, after which they will be held inside where it will tell the new President "a number of state secrets".

The upcoming prime minister will be charged with forming a cabinet, with which the French youngest top official looks to consolidate his receipt for a new governing way.

Macron, until 2016 was the economy minister in the outgoing Socialist administration, blew apart the traditional political boundaries of French politics on May 7.

Macron says his year-old Republique en Marche (Republic on the Move, REM) movement and government will be open to progressives of all stripes. In some cases, French presidents have appointed a prime minister on inauguration day.
