Ex-US Rep. Anthony Weiner to plead guilty in sexting case

I have a sickness, but I do not have an excuse.

Weiner said in court that he was first contacted by the girl in January 2016 and that for two months, he "engaged in obscene communications with this teenager, including sharing explicit images and encouraging her to engage in sexually explicit conduct, just as I had done and continued to do with adult women".

Weiner has admitted to a single charge of transferring obscene material to a minor, and won't appeal his sentence.

This afternoon a court official confirmed that Abedin filed for divorce after seven years of marriage.

Weiner was already in federal custody ahead of the hearing. The judge told him he would have to register as a sex offender. Weiner agreed to surrender his iPhone as part of the plea agreement.

Last September, The Daily Mail reported that Weiner, 51, had been sexting a 15-year-old girl in North Carolina for months, sending explicit texts, asking her to dress up in revealing outfits and to indulge in rape fantasies. Trump and other Republicans accused her of endangering national security by exposing classified information to potential hacking. A message left with a representative for Abedin seeking comment Friday morning was not immediately returned.

The U.S. attorney's office in Manhattan says the Democrat will appear in court at 11 a.m. Friday.

Weiner's attorney, Arlo Devlin-Brown, said in a statement that the former politician "accepted full responsibility for the inappropriate, sexually explicit communications he engaged in early past year". The offense "did not feature aggravating factors often present in cases of this kind".

The investigation into the then-51-year-old's relationship with the girl landed a trove of emails between Weiner and his estranged wife, Huma Abedin, a principal aide to then-candidate Hillary Clinton, in the F.B.I.'s lap. Days before the November presidential election, now-former FBI director James Comey told Congress about the FBI investigation into emails between Clinton and her aides, The Times reported past year.

Weiner also ran unsuccessfully for mayor of NY in 2013, but his campaign collapsed when he was found to be using the alias "Carlos Danger" to send explicit photographs to other women, explained USA Today.

Trump fired Comey days later amid the FBI's probe into whether Trump's campaign colluded with Russian Federation to defeat Clinton, an allegation he has vehemently denied.

His failed mayoral bid is the subject of the documentary "Weiner". He later ran a failed campaign for mayor of NY.
