Experts see instability in the legislature after B.C. election

"Only (Liberals)", said Weaver, "would suggest the approval of a heavy-oil pipeline that puts our communities and coastline at risk was done to advance our healthy environment".

"The only thing you can guarantee out of this close election is that an urban rural divide now exists in B.C.", said Joseph Angolano, vice-president of Mainstreet Research.

"I think the Green vote, in fact, helped the NDP fortunes in this election", she said the morning after the election.

Horgan also noted there are 176,000 ballots still to be counted. They want us to work together. The Green Party won three seats, but is now poised to have disproportionate sway.

Andrew Wilkinson, advanced education minister in Clark's government, said B.C. may not get definitive results until the end of the month, when he said absentee ballots and judicial recounts must be completed. If they instead chose to side the Liberals, they would form a slightly stronger majority with 46 seats.

With its paltry three seats, the Green Party tail will be wagging the B.C. legislature dog.

Weaver said it's too early for him to say whether he would back the Liberals or New Democrats but he was willing to compromise and was scheduled to meet with both Clark and Horgan on Wednesday afternoon.

Its leader, Andrew Weaver, a Cambridge-trained climate scientist who left an accomplished academic career to become a politician, had refused before the election to say which party he would support in a potential minority government.

"The Greens doubled their support to a record 16 per cent of the electorate and managed to win three seats on Vancouver Island".

The votes are in, and Christy Clark will remain premier for the time being.

Opposition leader John Horgan, appearing moments later at his election party down the block in Vancouver, declared: "A majority of British Columbians voted for a new government and I believe that is what they deserve".

Greg D'Avignon, CEO of the Business Council of British Columbia, doesn't think a minority government with the Greens holding sway will necessarily stop major energy projects like the Trans Mountain pipeline expansion or the $36 billion Pacific NorthWest LNG project from going forward.

It was the margin of victory - for now - for NDP candidate Ronna-Rae Leonard, who topped the Courtenay-Comox polls in Tuesday's provincial election with 37.15 per cent of the vote, edging Jim Benninger of the Liberals.

Weaver was the first Green elected to B.C.'s legislature four years ago when he surprisingly defeated former Liberal cabinet minister Ida Chong in Oak Bay-Gordon Head.

Not so now, however, in British Columbia.

Leonard garnered 10,058 votes, Benninger 10,049, Ernie Sellentin of the Green Party 4,907 and Conservative candidate Leah McCulloch 2,061. There are also absentee ballots to be counted. Tonight we won the popular vote. Political donations from corporations and unions were election issues for both the Liberals and NDP.

She said voters sent the message they want a bigger economy, not a bigger government, while keeping middle class taxes low.

This teeth gnashing over the results might yet be moot if the official results give the Liberals a clear majority. "If they're the ones who vote and they're the ones who suffer most because of poor health care, gosh, if I was a politician, I'd make damn sure I buttered that bread".
