Facebook to hire 3000 new employees to take down violent posts faster

Given that letting its users transform the video streaming service into the web's most easily accessible snuff film site doesn't match Facebook's "social media for the whole family" image, Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company will soon be hiring 3,000 more employees, almost doubling its staff of content reviewers.

The reviewers will also remove posts about child exploitation or hate speech. Part of the team's job is also to interface with local community groups and law enforcement to respond when someone may be about to harm themselves or is in danger because of someone else.

In a blog post Wednesday, May 3, 2017, Zuckerberg said that Facebook will hire another 3,000 people to review videos of crime and suicides following murders shown live.

He added: Just last week, we got a report that someone on [Facebook] Live was considering suicide.

Zuckerberg added, "If we're going to build a safe community, we need to respond quickly". Normally, a post or a video is only taken down when Facebook users complain and report it.

Wednesday's announcement by the Menlo Park company came after a spate of violent videos posted on Facebook, including an Alabama man who filmed his own death and a Thai man who killed his infant daughter.

In 2015, a man posted videos to social media of himself shooting and killing reporter Alison Parker, 24, and cameraman Adam Ward, 27, while they were filming a live broadcast for Roanoke, Virginia, news station WDBJ. The social network's staff was able to alert authorities and send out police support to the person in question and prevent him from taking his life. In other cases, we are not so lucky.

At the same time, Facebook said it is also testing pattern recognition to focus on posts that are "very likely to include thoughts of suicide". Recently, Facebook stepped up its security to oppose efforts by governments and others to spread misinformation or manipulate discussions for political reasons. Noticeably absent in Zuckerberg's post, however, are any concrete details regarding the employment status, training or support these 3000 new team members will receive.

Have you ever used Facebook Live?

Facebook's latest results highlighted the scale of the monitoring challenge ahead - with 1.94 billion active monthly users in the three months to the end of March.

Facebook's policy against the posting of such violent content is clear.

What Zuckerberg has yet to make explicit is that, though Facebook can hire and pay thousands of people to check content, until the A.I.to do it is perfected, we are all its employees.
