Fernando Alonso, Alexander Rossi Face Off In 'Forza' Ahead Of Indy 500

This feature originally appears in RACER's July 2017 issue (No.285) under the title "Close, but".

Rahal then grew serious, adding, "But I'm not going to lie to you, he's driving the same auto Townsend (Bell) drove past year, which was one of the favorites to win until the pit lane accident". "If you do, it will ruin you".

Alonso, who is skipping this year's Monaco Grand Prix to race at The Brickyard, will start from fifth place on the grid after two impressive qualifying sessions over the weekend.

Kanaan cracked that because he's from Brazil, he's a little more accustomed to handling "this stuff".

"I struggled with the extra grip and it was hard to find my feet", said Button. "I look at how fortunate I am to be unscathed". Carpenter was looking for his third in five years. I look at stuff like that.

"It's got a lot more grip than I'm used to - it was so much faster in FP2! So, I've been back to see him a couple times since and I figured since we were in the month of May again I should pop in and see how he was doing and I spent the morning with him, which was pretty special". "I have 22 to 25 guys in my shop, so it was only natural we could do it".

For Hildebrand, it's a confidence that's been building since last winter. Even for a team that regularly starts four cars, embarking on such an enormous challenge carries all sorts of potential pitfalls.

Hildebrand moved to the outside as he came onto the final stretch, wandered onto the marbles, and pancaked the wall. That is a good moment when you get in the vehicle on Sunday and all of the obligations are done with and you just go out there and do what you love to do, which is drive a race auto as fast as you can. "If I can do that, we will have a good day". On the track, conquering Indy has given him the same fits that have vexed the Andrettis for decades and left a gaping hole in his resume. Coming to terms with the personal disappointment associated with a near-miss is one thing, but through the eyes of some on the outside, a crash like the one Hildebrand experienced in 2011 can define him for years. Michael had it the worst, leading 431 laps in 16 career starts without ever getting the chance to swig that championship milk.

The Spanish two-time World Champion was in excellent spirits as fans and media mobbed him. "I could see that happening (with me)". "There was no hiding from it". He's on another level with the things he does and I've been a fan of his for a long time. And to me that seems like such a insane thing to ask.

"But I don't know, maybe I am falling behind after 100 laps or whatever!"

"I think it was a shock to everyone because it wasn't really in the pipeline", Chilton tells The Independent. "I think the place picks a victor". The series is in a different place.

With or without a win, reaching the finish line Sunday may be a small measure of success for Andretti.

"For me, the objective is to keep having fun and to prove myself".

The pair came back on Sunday in a knockout round with the other seven fastest teams to earn their ultimate starting spots, which also put Carpenter in the middle of the front row.

That strategy has worked well for Kanaan, who won the 500 in 2013.

But weather delays on Saturday pushed qualifying late into the day, giving Hildebrand only one shot at making the cutoff. "I realise it may not have the glamour of some of the other markets that are being spoken about, but it's here, it's ready to go".

"The Indy 500 is one of the greatest events in the sport".

"I call the Speedway a 'she, ' because to me, it's a girl". I would like to show my respects.
