FIFA keep bidding options open for 2026 World Cup

Meanwhile, the South American confederation has already throw its support for the 2026 host behind the North American bid, so a bid from Africa is really the only challenger left.

CONCACAF President and FIFA Vice President Victor Montagliani presided over the Congress, alongside members of the CONCACAF Council and General Secretary Philippe Moggio.

North America's request for an accelerated awarding of the 2026 World Cup without facing a challenge is on hold, for a few months at least.

The FIFA Council chose to allow other proposals in the next three months, said a communique by FIFA Tuesday.

"CONCACAF is actively supporting Canada, Mexico and the United States in this ambitious bid to bring the FIFA World Cup back to the CONCACAF region", said Montagliani.

"The expedited process, from a FIFA Council perspective, in our opinion shows the World Cup itself in the best light".

The All Whites' chances of making the World Cup have received a significant boost with the Fifa Council ratifying the proposal to increase the size of the tournament to 48 teams, starting from the 2026 event.

Shane Smeltz puts the All Whites ahead 1-0 against Italy at the 2010 Fifa World Cup in South Africa. "We need more information before we can take it to congress", she told Reuters on Monday. "We have a strong foundation for creating greater opportunities to make football better and prosperous".

Two qualifiers will advance from a six-team mini-tournament in November 2025, with all confederations apart from UEFA represented.

The new allotment guarantees at least a place for each continent as Oceania, now with 0.5 berth, was given one slot, while the increase was marginal for powerhouses Europe (13 to 16) and South America (4.5 to six). In the event of co-hosting, the number of host countries to qualify automatically would be decided by the FIFA Council. If there are multiple hosts, the FIFA Council will decide how many qualify automatically.
