Ford Offers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto Update to 2016 Owners

If your vehicle doesn't have a manufacturer-supported Android Auto option, there are aftermarket receivers available with pricing starting in the $300 range and Pioneer added five new models just yesterday that support both Android Auto and Apple's CarPlay.

To DIY the update, you'll need to download the right version for your vehicle from Ford's owner support website. The American automobile giant is pushing out Android Auto and Apple's CarPlay support to its 2016-model vehicles with the help of its existing SYNC 3 infotainment software.

Our SYNC 3 software platform was created to be easy to update so we can get our customers the latest and greatest features, functionally and security enhancements. "With over-the-air updates, we can deliver new features to customers in the background while they continue using their vehicles".

First introduced in 2014, CarPlay allows auto owners to access Apple apps from their vehicle's infotainment screen, including Phone, Music, Apple Maps, and more.

Android, Android Auto, Google Maps and Google Play are trademarks of Google Inc.

Keep in mind that while the getting Android Auto would be as simple as downloading the update, enabling CarPlay would require an upgrade of the vehicle's USB hub, something that requires a dealership visit and extra costs.

Those with Ford Sync 3 in 2017 models will already have support for Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, you simply have to connect your phone via USB.

If you're feeling "with it" technologically, it's also available via Ford's first-ever Wi-Fi update. The USB install method is also faster, but the Wi-Fi update option is the start of the company's efforts to really increase its OTA update program, which will be used for security improvements as well as infotainment bumps. A constant Wi-Fi connection isn't needed either, as the update will work in the background every time it has access until the update is complete.
