Tony Romo finishes with a birdie on 18. Split Rail is hosting one of the several local U.S. Open qualifiers today.

Tony Romo's pursuit of a U.S. Open berth took a big hit when he triple-bogeyed No. 15 at Split Rail Links and Golf Club in Aledo. I was encouraged with how I played overall. "I need to play in more tournaments because golf and tournament golf are two totally different deals".

Romo called an end to his National Football League career last month to embark on a broadcast career as the lead in-game NFL analyst for the CBS network.

Seven qualifiers will move on to a sectional qualifier. On Day 2, he was eight-over after three holes so the chances of advancing were slim. He returned to the competitive circuit at the Azalea Invitational in early April.

Edward Loar of Rockwall, Texas, posted the low score of 66. And that tournament was his first in almost four years because back and collarbone injuries forced him to curtail golf as he tried to prolong his Cowboys career.

"For me, this is really the beginning of the season", he said.

Romo also tried to qualify for the U.S. Open in 2008, 2010 and 2011.

Injuries and the emergence of Dak Prescott at quarterback past year as a rookie ultimately derailed Romo's football career.

Romo played in a threesome with Mike Rausch and David Lutterus, local pros. Rausch, a vice president at Golf Etc., had caddied for Romo in addition to playing with him in previous tournaments.
