France's Macron says EU treaty change 'not taboo'

The choice of Mr Philippe is aimed at drawing more defectors from The Republicans.

"Her room for manoeuvre is very limited - with her migration policy she has used up a lot of political capital in her own party", said a German minister speaking on condition of anonymity, referring to her liberal immigration policy that let more than a million asylum seekers into Germany since 2015.

The president's staff told some media organizations they were trying to give access to journalists with backgrounds covering the topic or theme of a visit, rather than only to political correspondents.

"Today, we talked about three areas and we will continue doing so later", Merkel said.

"If we can say why, what for, what the point is, then Germany will be ready". May insists that Britain must leave the bloc's single market in order to control immigration.

About potential changes on the main EU treaties, Merkel said the union can not resist the transformations across the world.

Speaking of the widespread reforms suggested by Macron she said it may be possible to change European Union treaties as would be required to enact them.

The online poll was carried out between May 15 and 17 - after Macron named conservative lawmaker Edouard Philippe as his prime minister and before the new government was unveiled on Wednesday. But she also made clear that treaty changes were not a topic immediately on the table.

Underlining concerns over Macron's proposals, Germany's biggest selling daily Bild warned that before seeking deeper European Union integration, "France must once again be at the same level as Germany politically and economically".

When a new French president is elected, their first trip overseas is to Germany.

CDU's Fuchs sees Macron as good partner for Germany.

The statement was a clear nod to Germany, which has been vigorously opposing the idea of taking responsibility for the debts of weaker, crisis-hit European Union member states.

"Macron clarified his position, saying he did not want Eurobonds or the mutualisation of (eurozone) debt" said Demesmay, referring to the pooling of funding and the build up of previous loans.

He sought on Monday to show solidarity with Germany on the migrant crisis - an issue on which Merkel has pressed for European Union countries to work together - by saying that a common asylum policy was one area where Paris could cooperate with Berlin.

"We need to re-establish the European project", said the French president, who added that for this change to occur it is necessary to "repair the trust" in the "historic relationship" between Paris and Berlin, while Merkel spoke of giving the two countries a "new dynamic" and a "new push".

The rest of the government is expected to be announced on Tuesday afternoon.

Former investment banker Macron, who trounced Le Pen in the 7 May presidential run-off, aims to take votes from both the Republicans and Socialists in next month's crucial parliamentary election.
