FSU Baseball Uses Comeback to Win ACC Championship Over UNC

Led by Drew Mendoza's three-run homer, Florida State scored five runs in a huge eighth inning that secured a 7-3 win and an ACC title.

Miami missed out on the tournament for the first time in 44 years. Florida Gulf Coast (42-18) is the 2-seed in the regional, and they will be taking on 3-seed MI (42-15) Friday afternoon.

The ACC Coastal Division champion Diamond Heels have earned the No. 2 national seed in the NCAA Tournament, and will be hosting regional games in Chapel Hill this weekend. A 5-run eighth inning and a stellar effort by the bullpen was the difference on Sunday as the eighth-seeded Seminoles topped No. 2 seed North Carolina for the crown. He gave up a single to the first batter he faced in the eighth before hitting the following batter with a pitch.

"As soon as I came off the field, Quincy (Nieporte) and Dylan Busby are in my ear telling me to relax, it's early", said Mendoza, who went 2 for 3 with two walks. For North Carolina, Tyler Lynn was 2-for-3 with a solo home run. Zack Gahagan immediately followed that up with a single, and Michael Busch plated him with an RBI double. They led 3-1 but couldn't hold on late as the Seminoles took the lead for good in the eighth inning.

Mendoza, Raleigh and Matt Henderson each had two hits for the Seminoles. And Drew Mendoza's homer in the seventh inning pulled the Seminoles to within one. Busby's RBI grounder put FSU on the board, but reliever Taylor Sugg retired Lueck on a high chopper back to the mound to leave the score at 3-1.

Both teams will now await the upcoming announcements regarding the 2017 NCAA tournament field.

FSU baseball will find out if they host Sunday night at 8:30 p.m. while the complete tournament field will be announced Monday at 12 p.m. on ESPN2.

Sunday's win was Florida State's sixth-consecutive win and the first time this year they beat North Carolina after being swept by them in the regular season. N.C. State and Virginia are the only two ACC teams who have to start the tournament on the road.
