Garry Monk resigns as Leeds manager

That came and went, but only last night new owner Andrea Radrizzani had said that it was the club's intention to take up a 12-month option on Monk.

Garry Monk insisted he saw his long-term future at Leeds United after a club statement hinted the departed head coach was unwilling to commit to a long-term contract.

The 18-year-old enjoyed an impressive breakthrough season in the middle of the park, making 38 appearances in all competitions and finding the back of the net just once - a 90 minute victor in a 3-2 victory away to Norwich in November. Orta is likely to arrive at Elland Road next week.

Currently, major bookmaker Sky Bet has former Boro manager Karanka as a 4/6 favourite to fill Garry Monk's shoes at Elland Road.

Monk is tipped to become the new manager at Middlesbrough, who were relegated from the Premier League this season. "But no regrets, we did our best".

"However, ultimately no agreement could be reached".

"After discussions with the new owner we have unfortunately been unable to agree a suitable way for us to all move forward together".

"Following that meeting yesterday Garry's agent requested that the option was not exercised and his resignation was received this morning". That he evaded Cellino's prolific axe only to resign two days after the Italian's departure is a curiosity hard to overlook.

Monk has recently resigned from his role as the Leeds United manager after just a season in charge of the Whites.

And Monk has now emerged as a leading candidate to fill the hot-seat at Karanka's old club Middlesbrough.

'Whilst we are deeply saddened by Garry's decision, there is no individual bigger than our Club and we will now begin a process to identify and appoint a new Head Coach to take the club to the next level.

Radrizzani refuted those claims and later suggested that "at no time did Garry wish to discuss terms for a longer contract".

"It is with huge disappointment that my time at Leeds United has come to an end", Monk wrote in a lengthy statement released via his Twitter account.
