Google ups artificial intelligence game at annual developer conference

Google is kickstarting the 2017 edition of its annual developer conference Google I/O later today with CEO Sundar Pichai taking the stage for the keynote. If you tap on a name, street address, or phone number, it will also automatically display a suggested app, such as Contacts, or Google Maps.

"Humans are interacting with computing in more natural and immersive ways", he said.

Google also unveiled Lens, which lets people point their camera at things to find out more information about them.

"In a AI-first world, we are rethinking all our products and applying machine learning and AI to solve user problems", said Mr Pichai.

This feature will use Google's existing Chromecast streaming device which plugs into a TV and enables users to send content from mobile devices and laptops to the screen. "That's a selling proposition that people can get excited about", Samat said. Google today provided a look at its latest digital offerings, with a heavy focus on its efforts to extend artificial intelligence features into more of its apps and services.

For example, opening an email containing an invitation to dinner might trigger a prompt to reply "I'm in".

Along with Google Home, Google Assistant will soon get some new features worth talking about. Google also designed the service to minimize data usage on bandwidth-hungry services like YouTube. Google is now allowing users to build conversational apps for phones that will work with Assistant, allowing users to get responses from third-party services as well as from Google.

Google Assistant, Google's take on Siri, just launched for the iPhone. When its lights come on, you'll be able to ask Google "What's up?" Executives are also laying out how the company is expanding the reach and capabilities of the Google Assistant, which is now available on some smartphones and an internet-connected speaker called Home.

The next version of Google's Android operating system wants to make using your phone easier, faster and more secure.

Google, for example, added features to its internet-connected Home speaker - such as hands-free calling.

Dave Burke, vice president of engineering at Android, wrote in a blog that the Android Go experience will ship in 2018 for all Android devices that have 1GB or less of memory.

Google said that while it is happy with the momentum of its Daydream virtual reality platform based on using smartphone as screens in headsets, it is working with partners on stand-alone virtual reality gear.
