House oversight chair seeks Comey memos on Trump

Trump fired Comey last week, sparking suspicions that the president is trying to cover up his administration's ties with Russian Federation.

The White House has denied reports that Trump pressed Comey to drop an investigation into Trump's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

"Former director Comey will have his choice of venue", said Senate Intelligence Vice Chairman Mark Warner, a Virginia Democrat.

The New York Times and The Washington Post said Comey wrote in the memo that Trump had asked him to end the FBI investigation of Flynn, who resigned after misleading White House officials about his contacts with the Russian ambassador.

While we hope that Congress will be serious about its constitutional oversight role, we believe the issues raised by the Comey memos are so vital that the public should have access to them without delay. Even House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Chairman Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, who has been less than enthusiastic in pursuing potential wrongdoing in this administration, shot off a letter to the Federal Bureau of Investigation demanding all Comey memos documenting conversations with the president. "I hope you can let this go", the memo reportedly quotes Trump as saying.

Most GOP lawmakers tried on Wednesday to tamp down the controversy and head off new investigations of Russian meddling in the USA election and potential ties to Trump's campaign. He continues, "So we will have to see what evidence as to those in Trump's circle emerges, though I certainly would not be surprised if it did, given the corrupt, enabling atmosphere that pervades the White House and the administration".

"The drug epidemic is poisoning too many American lives, and we're going to stop it", Mr. Trump said. Trump himself said he had "an absolute right" as president to share "facts pertaining to terrorism" and airline safety with Russian Federation.

The commotion around Trump's statements on Flynn has somewhat obscured his no less chilling request that Comey jail journalists for publishing information based on leaks - something that has never happened in the history of this country.

The Comey memo's emergence had congressional Democrats suggesting that the president engaged in obstruction of justice, an impeachable offence.

In previous months, Republican lawmakers were more likely to fully defend Trump - even after he and his administration made comments and policy changes that generated intense criticism. Then, in a telling sign the temperature was going up, he said at a GOP dinner Tuesday night that the Trump situation has reached "Watergate size and scale".

"We need to have immediate classified briefings on what occurred at this meeting so that Congress can at least know as much as Russian leaders", she said in a statement.

Democrats were far less sparing in their criticism.

Rocked by days of damaging developments, President Donald Trump's White House is looking ahead to the president's upcoming foreign trip - and trying to get his plane in the air with as little additional turbulence as possible.

"On its face, this is a textbook prima facie case of an attempt to obstruct justice", concluded Sen.
