Indian Doctors Conduct Country's First-Ever Uterus Transplantation

India's first womb transplant at Pune hospital today

The uterus was transplanted from a 44-year-old woman from Solapur into her 21-year-old daughter, who was unable to conceive. Medical literature shows many implanted wombs - four womb transplantations failed in the USA before their first success - were rejected and less than a third of the recipients have delivered a baby.

Doctors said the recipient would be able to menstruate and conceive normally, with the surgery opening a new avenue for motherhood, besides the methods of surrogacy or adoption. Hence, the donor has to undergo one surgery, whereas the recipient has to undergo three surgeries.

The surgery was performed by a team of doctors at Pune's Galaxy Care Hospital in southwest India. Dr Sanjeev Jadhav, who has done heart, lung and kidney transplants, assisted Puntambekar.

The report also revealed that the minimally invasive retrieval of the womb carried out mainly through key hole surgery medically known as laparoscopic surgery, and its subsequent transplant performed only through open surgery took nine hours. "Since they knew about the uterus transplant, they approached us and accepted the surgery option", he said.Fortunately, her mother was found to be a medicallysuitable uterus donor for her.

The operations are meant to help women who want to conceive but can not because they were born without a uterus, suffered damage to it or had to have it removed.

Pune's Galaxy Care Laparoscopy Institute, where the surgery will be carried out, has been granted a license by the state's Directorate of Health Services to carry out the transplant.

The first such procedure was performed in Sweden in 2012 and the patient gave birth to the world's first baby from a transplanted uterus in 2014, and was conducted by Dr Mats Brännström, who had reportedly criticised the Indian procedure for its lack of proper preparation and for the risk that it would put both donor and receiver at.

The third womb transplantation at GCLI will take place on a third woman who's suffering from cervical cancer, later.
