Judge confirms Prince's 6 siblings as heirs to his estate

Singer Prince died after a drug overdose in April a year ago.

"The heirs of the estate are determined to be Omarr Baker, Alfred Jackson, Sharon Nelson, Norrine Nelson, John R. Nelson and Tyka Nelson", Judge Eide wrote in the filing made public on Friday.

A Minnesota court has determined that Prince's six siblings are the lawful heirs to his fortune and that the Minnesota music icon left no will before his death a year ago.

Some appeals are still pending from people whose claims of heirship were rejected earlier.

He also ruled that Prince's assets will only be distributed with a formal court order, but that they won't be distributed in any way that might "adversely affect" the claims in the pending appeals. Attorneys for those who have been rejected as heirs say their interests would be harmed if the district court doesn't wait out the appeals process.

Prince's family, of course, has raised issues about the delay of distribution, saying that prolonging it will diminish the estate.

The determination, which comes 13 months after the musician's sudden death on April 21, 2016, means that other potential heirs will have one year to come forward to have their claims considered by the court.

According to an announcement at the time, those recordings comprised most of Prince's released work after he ended his initial deal with Warner Bros in 1996 as well as unreleased material, but also rights to certain recordings within that initial Warner deal; Warner is disputing those terms.

The judge separately scheduled a hearing for May 31 to hear a proposal to rescind a contract between Prince's estate and Universal, the world's largest music label conglomerate.

Good news for Prince's loved ones.
