Labour thinks it can win back seats in Glasgow from SNP

Miss Davidson's party scooped 276 council seats and pushed Labour, with 14 fewer, into third place overall, while the SNP remained Scotland's largest party, taking home 431 seats.

Ms Aitken said she was "very happy" with the outcome after her party spent the last five years building towards this election.

Sturgeon has explicitly ruled out doing any deals with the Tories, even though the SNP had two coalitions with Conservative councillors after the 2012 election. 'We said no, ' declared posters featuring Ruth Davidson's face, 'we meant it.' That clearly resonated with Unionist (rather than just Tory) voters, just as Nicola Sturgeon's anti-Tory, pro-referendum message played well with her own core support.

The SNP hasn't lost ground across Scotland today, what we've seen is the collapse of Labour and that's the reason for the increase in the Conservative vote.

An SNP spokesman said: "This is deluded fantasy from Labour after they took such a hammering in last week's local elections - losing 132 councillors across Scotland".

They came second in the election and the SNP came first. "Their chances of forming a government at Westminster are the stuff of utter fantasy".

The Tories also earned more first preference votes than the SNP in Gordon, where the former Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond is the incumbent MP.

"So we've seen a huge resurgence and there are people out there that want to see that fightback against the SNP and they know now that it's the Scottish Conservatives that are going to lead it".

"The people have their say at the ballot box and I think the north-east of Scotland has a way of bringing people who make vainglorious boasts down to earth with a sharp bump".

"The difference between the Tories and the SNP couldn't be clearer".

In retrospect, Nicola Sturgeon pushing for a second independence referendum when she did has turned out to be an absolute gift for her bitterest foes.

She insisted there was "not a shred of disappointment" that the SNP had failed to secure an overall majority in Glasgow City Council, where Labour had been in power since 1980.

"Obviously I'd hoped for a majority and I believe we would have got it had it not been for the Tories entering the fray in a big way".

A total of 262 councillors were elected on a Labour platform, although one of them had been expelled from the party after the ballot papers had been printed. "In a first-past-the-post General Election, it's now abundantly clear it is only Labour that can defeat the SNP in these seats". And the SNP have not had any difficulty increasing their vote in local by-elections during the last two years.

"The strength of feeling that's out there at this election is so much stronger than I've come across at previous elections", she said.
