Then, at least 16 hospitals in England's National Health Service were affected, locking doctors and nurses out of patients' records unless they paid up. Outpatient appointments, diagnostic tests and routine operations will all be cancelled.

Cyber security experts worked through the weekend alongside the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC), part of the GCHQ spy agency, to patch computer systems but some hospitals still cautioned patients on Monday to only seek treatment for life-threatening emergencies.

The worldwide "ransomware" cyberattack wreaked havoc in hospitals, schools and offices across the globe on Monday. And despite the best efforts of a young security researcher in the United Kingdom who goes by MalwareTech, the temporarily halted ransomware has simply been altered and is being spread by copycats. The site is now back up but the real cause of the problem is not yet clear, said spokesman Hajime Nishikawa.

"This means there has been no loss of personal data, nor are there any changes to planned clinical services", he said.

Images that were posted online of the NHS pop-up look almost identical to pop-up ransomware windows that hit Spain's Telefonica, a powerful attack that forced the large telecom to order employees to disconnect their computers from its network and to resort to an intercom system to relay messages, according to Bleeping Computer.

Hitachi spokeswoman Yuko Tainiuchi said emails were slow or not getting delivered, and files could not be opened. "Because they could have done something ages ago to get this problem fixed, and they didn't do it".

The Japan Computer Emergency Response Team Coordination Center said 2,000 computers in Japan were reported affected so far, citing an affiliate foreign security organization that it can not identify.

Hospitals in London, North West England and Central England have all been affected, according to the BBC.

Australian officials said so far only three small-to-medium sized businesses had reported being locked out of their systems while New Zealand's ministry of business said a small number of unconfirmed incidents were being investigated. South Korea said just nine cases of ransom ware had been found, giving no further details. As Sean Dillon, the RiskSense security analyst who reverse engineered DoublePulsar, told ThreatPost: "This is the most critical Windows patch since [Conficker]", which is one the largest similar infections to date. CJ CGV Co. was restoring its advertising servers at dozens of its movie theaters after the attack left the company unable to display trailers of upcoming movies. "GCHQ have a lot of questions to answer about their very unsafe strategy of hoarding knowledge of security problems", Killock said.

A GLOBAL cyber attack that has struck computers across Europe and Asia is believed to have infected its first Australian business, the federal government says.

Australia appears to have escaped the worst fallout from a huge global ransomware attack, but the Prime Minister's cybersecurity adviser has warned that "this is not game over" in the battle between hackers and security agencies.

Chinese state media said 29,372 institutions there had been infected along with hundreds of thousands of devices.

"Private sector companies are obviously vulnerable as well and I think there is a concern that as people switch on their computers we may see more impact from the virus but we will be working as hard as we can to minimise that".
