Nasa's latest video of Saturn might be its most exciting yet

While NASA's Cassini spacecraft is preparing for its third dive over Saturn, the team has compiled a stunning video of the first plunge between Saturn and its rings.

This further heads past the hexagon-shaped jet stream covering the outer boundary and beyond that too. Seeing those images we can say that life on one or the other of Saturn's moons can at least be a possibility.

The unmanned Cassini-Huygens spacecraft has been in the headlines recently as she sends back "swan song" images of Saturn's rings after a mission lasting over 19 years.

Cassini imaging team associate Kunio Sayanagi said: "I was surprised to see so many sharp edges along the hexagon's outer boundary and the eye-wall of the polar vortex".

Cassini made its first dive on April 27. The final phase - called the Grand Finale - is based on the 22 repeated dives through the gap between Saturn and its innermost rings.

"Something must be keeping different latitudes from mixing to maintain those edges".

Cassini's will perform her third dive between Saturn and its rings on May 9th. Cassini needed to reorient itself and use the antenna for protection thus the need to point it towards the direction of the spacecraft.

The images, which show Saturn's curved surface, have been projected onto a flat plane here to enable assembly into a continuous movie sequence.

This plunge into what once was unexplored space kicked off Cassini's Grand Finale - the end of its 13-year mission to explore the unusual, ringed planet and its moons. Cassini will be "crashed" into Saturn on September 15, 2017, after a journey of almost 20 years in space.
