National Safe Boating Week is May 20 - 26

Alex Hinson, Boating Education Coordinator for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission said it's important for program participants to know that everyone who takes the course still must pass an in-person exam at a testing site.

This is to heighten awareness of different life jacket types that are available, including inflatable life jackets, and to demonstrate their comfort and versatility by wearing them to work. Open water season is here and many of those 800,000 plus boats are already on the water now that fishing season is open.

National Safe Boating Week kicks off Saturday, May 20, with Ready, Set, Wear It!, a program created to encourage the public to wear life jackets. Life Jacket World Record Day will be held on Saturday, May 20.

In 2015, 10,917 participants from 11 countries and several dogs, put on their life jackets to participate in the event. That's why President Eisenhower instituted National Safe Boating Week almost 60 years ago.

Indiana Conservation Officers want to you have a safe and fun summer, while out or near the water, please wear your life jacket. "You have a responsibility to yourself, your passengers and fellow boaters to be as safe as possible".

The goal of National Safe Boating Week is to educate the public about the importance of safe boating practices and wearing life jackets while on the water.
