Southern mayor takes new approach towards Confederate monuments Pete Burd

Crowds gathered once again to watch masked men work to bring down the Confederate statue. The city will not release details on when that monument will come down, citing security concerns. Crews finally lifted the statue off its pedestal just after 3 a.m., almost seven hours after they first arrived, to loud cheers and a handful of jeers. Providing public safety for things like peaceful public demonstrations and critical incidents is standard for City government, and the City provides this public safety and logistical support.

Work began to remove it around 7 p.m. Tuesday, when police officers began moving people away from the monument in preparation for its removal.

Unlike the first three statues, city officials plan to take Lee's statue down during the day, with Mayor Mitch Landrieu planning a major speech Friday afternoon to explain his reasoning.

With the all-night process of removing the statue of Confederate Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard from...

The New Orleans City Council voted in 2015 to have the monuments taken down after declaring them a public nuisance. Recent court rulings cleared the way for the monuments to be removed and relocated after spirited public debate.

Beauregard commanded the attack at Fort Sumter, S.C., that marked the outbreak of the Civil War.

The Beauregard statue was the third Confederate-era memorial the city has removed.

Beauvoir is where Jefferson Davis lived during retirement. The statue was dedicated in 1911. The monument was at the center of one last legal challenge from monument supporters who claimed City Park - not the city - has ownership of the monument.

It was the third of four such monuments to be removed in the city. All three were removed in the middle of the night by masked construction crews.

"He has introduced racial and other discord into her city that was healing", said Hillyer about Landrieu. Central Standard Time Wednesday, May 17, 2017, from the entrance to City Park in New Orleans.

A brass band arrived on the anti-monument side of spectators and chanted "take them down". The bill would allow local governments to take down a memorial only if voters approve the action at "an election held for that goal". Dylann Roof, an avowed racist, shot and killed nine black parishioners at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church.

Efforts to remove Confederate statues are underway in other parts of the South.

The city says that an American flag will go at the former site of the Jefferson Davis Memorial at Jefferson Davis Parkway and Canal Street. The event was criticized for evoking images of the Ku Klux Klan, and a counter-protest was held on Sunday night.

In St. Louis, Missouri, Mayor Lyda Krewson has committed to removing a 32-foot tall Confederate monument from a park.

Later Wednesday police say they arrested a father and son for allegedly spray-painting the statue's base with the words "Gen. Beauregard CSA".
