New York Yankees retire Derek Jeter's No. 2 jersey

Sunday night, The New York Yankees held ceremonies to retire his number and dedicate the plaque that has been placed in Monument Park. Probably the last time in a long time before we see five more numbers retired and plaques unveiled in Monument Park. He is the 22 Yankee to have his number retired.

Jeter said during his speech between games of the Yankees-Astros doubleheader.

The Bleacher Creatures' first-inning Roll Call of Yankees starters included Jeter, who led NY to five World Series titles during a big league career that spanned 1995-2014, and fans chanted Jeter's name in the late innings.

"Jorge had the big ears, Andy had the big nose". A five-time World Series champion, Jeter amassed 3,465 hits and was a 14-time All-Star, while never playing for a team with a sub-.500 record. He is the 22nd player to have his number retired by the Yankees, by far the most among major league teams.

"I played here for 20 years and I learned that time flies and that memories fade, but family is forever", Jeter told the sold-out crowd of 48,000 that frequently broke into a familiar "Der-ek Je-ter" chant that rocked Yankee Stadium.

He also thanked fans "for pushing me, for challenging me, for making me accountable, and more importantly, for embracing me since day one".

Jeter decided not to use notes as he addressed the crowd of 47,883.

Derek Jeter has taken his place among Yankee legends.

Sunday night at Yankee Stadium, the New York Yankees celebrated Derek Jeter's career by retiring his No. 2 jersey and enshrining him in Monument Park. Reggie Jackson was on the field in shirt sleeves.

Introduced by a recording of late Yankee Stadium public address announcer Bob Sheppard — it was played before Jeters at-bats following Sheppards death in 2010 — Jeter wore a blue three-piece peak-lapel suit, white collared shirt and no tie. Additionally, he was the 2004 ALCS MVP and 2013 World Series MVP. I feel selfish saying that because, like I said, we were eliminated.

He rode to the infield in a golf cart as Frank Sinatras version of “My Way” was played.

"I was always the youngest", Jeter said, "so I figured I'd be last".

In other words, Ortiz is the sort of player who deserves the pomp and circumstance Jeter received on Sunday.

The four-time All-Star's average fastball velocity has dropped from a major league-high 100.9 miles per hour last year to 98.2 miles per hour this year, according to MLB's Statcast. That distinction is how that era of Yankees fans was symbolic of what Derek Jeter meant.

Then, Jeter delivered a speech. "I like the approach, though, I may be retired, but I still know how people try to get you to (say things)". This is one of those special days that you'll never forget. Jeter is reportedly teaming with Jeb Bush in trying to buy the Miami Marlins, whom Mattingly manages.
