NATO leaders will make decisions on the fight against terrorism and burden sharing at their meeting later on the day, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said here on Thursday.

Speaking to reporters at a news conference in Brussels, Stoltenberg said North Atlantic Treaty Organisation leaders Thursday will adopt a new action plan to step up the fight against terrorism, which will include NATO's membership in the global coalition against Daesh.

He said Nato would expand air surveillance over the jihadist group's territory in Iraq and Syria and "establish a new terrorism intelligence cell" at the Nato HQ to help stop "foreign fighters", referring to Nato country nationals who went to join IS. The NATA chief also urged Russian Federation to support an Afghan-led peace process for regional stability.

"Russia is on NATO's agenda always and Russian Federation will be discussed during the meeting later on today", Stoltenberg said ahead of the summit.

The Prime Minister will also back calls by Mr Trump for other allies to take on a greater share of the burden of collective defence - a key demand of the United States president.

In 2014, all allies agreed to enhance defence spending to two percent of GDP within a decade.

The Liberal government has argued that its contribution is bigger than the numbers suggest, pointing to its commitment to send up to 455 troops to head up a multinational mission in Latvia, as part of efforts to curb Russian aggression in the Baltics, as another way to contribute.

"We will agree on Nato's membership in the [anti-IS] coalition".

"We are very concerned about the fact that they are hampered, so they are not able to conduct the monitoring, we see also that one of the monitors was killed", Stoltenberg went on to say.

"So, Russia is on NATO's agenda", he said.

"We will also later on this year decide on the exact levels troop".

"Our aim is to train the Afghan forces to enable them to step up their efforts in stabilizing their own country, countering Taliban but also fighting different terrorist groups in Afghanistan, including (ISIL)", Stoltenberg said.

"It's for the European Union and the U.S.to decide on economic sanctions", Stoltenberg said.
