North Korea Detains Fourth US Citizen, Another Korean American PUST Faculty

North Korea's state-run media announced Sunday that an ethnic Korean man with USA citizenship was "intercepted" two days ago by authorities for unspecified hostile acts against the country.

Tony Kim was an accounting professor at Pyongyang University; he was also teaching other courses.

The U.S. State Department released a statement noting that it's aware of the latest arrest, and revealed that it's working with the the Swedish Embassy in Pyongyang to obtain more information.

Currently, there are three other US citizens who are being held in North Korea. "Therefore, we can not comment on anything that Mr Haksong Kim is alleged to have done", a university statement said. But they bring to four the number of US citizens now known to be in custody in the North. It is unclear what prompted his detention, but he has been charged with "hostile criminal acts with an aim to subvert the country".

"I think that if North Korea continues down a degree of provocative behavior, then those circumstances will never be there", White House press secretary Sean Spicer said earlier this month.

The DPRK warning was delivered just days before North Korea said it has detained its' fourth American citizen.

North Korea has detained a USA citizen - a self-described Christian missionary - raising the number of Americans held there to four.

The others are Otto Warmbier, serving a 15-year prison term with hard labor for alleged anti-state acts - he allegedly tried to steal a propaganda banner at his tourist hotel - and Kim Dong Chul, serving a 10-year term with hard labor for alleged espionage.

On Sunday, Kim Hak Song became the fourth American citizen now jailed by the repressive regime, on charges such as espionage and "crimes against the state". In his public confession, he said he had spied for South Korean intelligence and had tried to spread religion among North Koreans. He was visiting the country on one of a handful of a guided tours organized by private companies where foreign tourists are chaperoned by North Korean minders and shown the country's good side. Beijing is urging Washington to consider economic support, negotiating a formal peace treaty to officially end the Korean War, and starting talks toward normalizing diplomatic relations.

The so-called track two talks would be the first since U.S. President Donald Trump took office in January and come at a time of tensions over North Korea's efforts to develop a nuclear missile that can hit the United States.

"However, I can say that the nuclear test will be conducted at the place and time as decided by our supreme leader, Kim Jong Un".
