He said it's been "difficult to get to" because of "steep terrain".

A county spokesperson says the plane crashed in to the hillside upon landing.

Steve Altnau, president of Air Cargo Carriers, the company that owned and operated the plane, confirmed the pilots' families have been notified in the release.

The National Transportation Safety Board announced on Twitter that the crash is being investigated.

Two people aboard a cargo propeller plane flying packages for UPS died after the left wing struck the runway at Yeager Airport in West Virginia Friday morning, according to federal and local officials.

"It's hard terrain to negotiate", said Mike Plante, a spokesman at Yeager airport, which serves West Virginia's capital.

Yeager's airport remained closed Friday morning and a state of emergency was declared for the airport, which services both cargo planes and passenger airlines.

Staff was collecting water samples near the crash site, the company said, adding that its treatment plant has not detected any changes in water quality.

It was not immediately clear what caused the accident.

The plane had flown from Louisville, Kentucky, and arrived at the West Virginia airport at 5:43 a.m., Plante said.

New outlets report emergencies crews are at the scene.

Airport officials have proposed spending $290 million to rebuild and extend the runway after a landslide in 2015 took out a church and an unoccupied house, Fox News reported.

The initial witness mark on the runway is about 340 feet from the runway threshold, according to English.
