Objectives To Watch For During Trump's First Overseas Trip

Trump's advisers saw it as an opportunity for the United States to boldly reassert itself on the world stage and resume a leadership role that the administration believes was abdicated by President Barack Obama. These are not the best of circumstances.

As General McMaster put it: "President Trump understands that America first does not mean America alone".

Trump is expected to be welcomed warmly by leaders in Riyadh and Jerusalem, but lingering questions over his views on the Iran nuclear deal, commitment to North Atlantic Treaty Organisation security and skepticism of the Paris climate agreement could generate tension at meetings with European counterparts in Brussels and Sicily.

There's precedent for this: In 2016 when President Obama traveled overseas, he was asked repeatedly - nearly exclusively it seemed - about the presidential campaign and then-candidate Donald Trump.

He said Iran would retaliate by adding nine USA individuals and companies to its own sanctions list, accusing them of "clear violations of human rights" in relation to their support for Israel or "terrorist groups" in the Middle East.

In Trump, many Saudis see a decisive, business-focused leader, who they say shares their goals in the region.

"The areas of understanding and the areas of agreement are far greater than any potential areas of disagreement", he said recently in Washington. "He's already a president viewed skeptically by much of the world". The European countries are going to push him to say, hey, we're not getting the credit that we deserve for all that we're doing.

"That's an internal Iranian matter", Saudi Foreign Minister Adel al-Jubeir told journalists when asked his expectations for Friday's presidential vote in Iran.

Trump, during the campaign, had said the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation alliance was obsolete.

But several of Trump's top advisers want to tilt US policy in the Arab world back toward Sunni power, led by the Saudis, as a counterweight to Shiite Iran.

Saudi Arabia confirmed on Thursday that it will sign commercial and political deals with the United States during President Donald Trump's visit to Riyadh next week.

Saudi Arabia follows strict Islamic laws that bans men and women together in public.

Trump has not always returned the love.

Saudi Arabia is said to have been chosen as the first stop because it's the birthplace of Islam and the custodian of the two Holy Mosques.

Also reported by local news organizations to be attending are President Fuad Masum of Iraq, President Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi of Egypt, President Ashraf Ghani of Afghanistan and Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif of Pakistan. It's believed that Raviv had also visited Saudi Arabia in the past while with CBS News.
