Officials piece together events before nursing home shooting

Law enforcement officials gather outside the scene of a shooting outside the Pine Kirk nursing home in Kirkersville, Ohio on Friday, May 12, 2017.

The gunman was in a wooded area behind the nursing home when he encountered two passers-by, whom he temporarily took hostage.

"Once the shot was sacked at the chief, the two hostages took off running", Thorp said. DiSario, who had been serving as chief for three weeks, was a father of six, with another one on the way.

This undated image released by Allison Burnett shows her mother Cindy Krantz, a 48-year-old nurse's aide who was fatally shot, Friday, May 12, 2017, at an OH nursing home where she worked.

Following a shooting that ended in the deaths of four at the Pine Kirk Care Center in Kirkersville on Friday, authorities have identified the gunman as 43-year-old Thomas Hartless.

Emergency personnel arrive to the scene of a shooting outside Pine Kirk nursing home in Kirkersville, Ohio on Friday, May 12, 2017.

This story has been corrected to show that it's Kirkersville Police Chief Steven Eric DiSario, Desario.

Officials say Hartless killed two female employees-Marlina Medrano, a nurse, and 48-year-old Cindy Krantzat, a nurse's aide-at the nursing home in Licking County.

Spokeswoman Jill Del Greco, of the OH attorney general's office, said investigators had more interviews planned and learning more about the connection between Hartless and Medrano is part of their efforts. Hartless was released from jail in April after his latest domestic violence case in March. "I am afraid to be alone with him, that he will hurt me for good".

Another former girlfriend said in court documents in 2009 that Hartless held her captive when she tried to leave him over abuse, according to the Dispatch. Records show Medrano had reported injuries including a concussion and cuts requiring stitches.

The Columbus Dispatch profiled Hartless, painting a picture of a man who was violent with any woman he came into contact with.

A report via WHIO told of the slain police chief expecting his seventh child with his wife and had only been chief about three weeks when the deadly shooting occurred. The hostages escaped unharmed, as did all 23 residents of the nursing home. The chief's last radio communication said he had the man in sight.

Gov. John Kasich called on government buildings to fly their flags at half-mast in honor of the victims.
