Palestinian factions call for 'Day of Rage' during Trump visit

But Trump appeared to back off on his promise early in his presidency, and the White House told reporters last week that the president is still undecided on the issue.

Hier took the former president to task, saying, "Unfortunately, Jimmy Carter is the wrong person giving President Trump advice on how to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict".

But officials on both sides see scant prospects for any major breakthrough in long-stalled negotiations during his 24-hour visit on Monday and Tuesday.

Friedman says that Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas wants peace talks with Israel without any preconditions at all, as soon as possible. But as Trump prepares to visit the region this weekend, apprehension reigns instead. His decision to put his son-in-law Jared Kushner at the heart of the peace process is an example of his unpredictability. Israeli media reported that US and Israeli officials got into a shouting match after the Americans rebuffed Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's request to join Trump at the Western Wall in Jerusalem's Old City.

Though these are just the highlights of 35 events set to take place during this coming week in Israel's capital, the spotlight will naturally focus on Trump's visit. Israeli politicians are unsure what Trump's message will be.

"We've been very clear what our position is and what we would like to see done, but we're not looking to provoke anyone when everyone's playing really nice", the official said.

Flying in directly from his first stop in Saudi Arabia, Trump is unlikely to lay out Middle East peace proposals, not least because, as aides acknowledge, his administration has yet to craft a strategy.

United States officials, meeting with Israeli officials to arrange Trump's visit, said the Western Wall was in the West Bank.

She added, "Now is the right time to honor our friend and ally by fully recognizing Jerusalem as the eternal and undivided capital of Israel".

Israeli officials have been especially unnerved by Trump. Prime Minister Netanyahu's bold and visionary outreach to Sunni Arabs on the basis of TTP: Terror, Technology and Peace, is completely in sync with President Trump's vision of how good vs. evil will ultimately win the day.

Days of Israeli outrage later, the White House hasn't changed their mind.

Approximately five dozen pro-Israel Christian leaders representing 60 million believers in the United States are petitioning President Donald Trump through a letter to keep his promise and move the U.S. Embassy from its current location in Tel Aviv to Israel's capital in Jerusalem.

"I'm disappointed he didn't move the embassy", said Mort Klein, the executive director of the Zionist Organization of America.

"It is something that I think is, frankly, maybe not as hard as people have thought over the years", the USA president said at the time.

Taken together, these diplomatic tensions could put a distance between the US and Israel at a time when both countries are tackling the common challenges of Iran, Syria, and a possible commencement of new peace talks with the Palestinians.

Some Gulf Arab diplomats have floated the notion of making a positive gesture toward Israel, possibly a limited upgrading of diplomatic and economic ties, in exchange for up-front concessions to the Palestinians.

"I hope that President Trump would give us a chance", Erekat said at the World Economic Forum on the Middle East and North Africa at the Jordanian Dead Sea resort of Sweimeh.
