As wishes poured in for the two year old princess, the royal family followed the tweet, posting, "TRH would like to thank everyone for the lovely messages they have received & hope that everyone enjoys this photograph as much as they do". The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have said they are "delighted" to share this new photograph of Princess Charlotte enjoying the outdoors to mark their only daughter's second birthday on Tuesday May 2.

It is not the first time Princess Charlotte has proved a trend-setter for children's fashion.

Since the picture's release yesterday, ahead of Princess Charlotte's official birthday today (2 May), there has been heated debate as to whether the princess looks more like her mother or father.

Her parents marked the occasion Monday by distributing a snapshot of Charlotte taken by her mother, the Duchess of Cambridge.

The pair made headlines a fortnight ago when they joined Prince Harry to candidly discuss the impact of Princess Diana's death on her young sons. Hollywood Life wrote that Charlotte is smiling in a "we are not amused" kind of way, and the youngest royal looks exactly like a whole line of royals, including Queen Elizabeth and Kate Middleton and Prince William's son, Prince George. She has to make an official visit to Luxembourg only days before Pippa's wedding, a time when she probably wants to be helping Pippa and making sure Princess Charlotte is ready for the limelight on the big day. The Duchess, a skilled photographer who is responsible for many of her family's most memorable images, captured her daughter outside their home in Anmer Hall in Norfolk, England. She is wearing a yellow sheep-printed cardigan and has her hair tied back with a small clip.

The Cambridges will be spending more time at Kensington Palace in London when William leaves his air ambulance helicopter pilot job in the summer and devotes more time to royal duties. For her first birthday, Charlotte wore a pretty pink dress from M&H and shoes from Early Days.
