Projections show Macron elected French President

After a resounding victory in Sunday's runoff, Emmanuel Macron will be sworn in as France's next President at the Elysee palace on May 14, outgoing President Francois Hollande said.

"I have no doubt about climate change and how committed we have to be regarding this issue", Macron, speaking in English, said.

Le Pen's National Front (FN) and the other elections losers are all hell bent on bouncing back in the parliamentary vote.

Paris - Far-right leader Marine Le Pen lost her bid to become France's first female head of state, but she is unbowed and is making plans for a major makeover of her party and the upcoming June's electoral battle.

An estimation by research firm Elabe for BFMTV show that Macron won the presidential race with 65.9 percent of votes, while Le Pen scored 34.1 percent.

It was the first time Hollande and Macron appeared together in public since August 2016.

EU Council President Donald Tusk also offered his congratulations, saying the French had chosen "liberty, equality and fraternity" and "said no to the tyranny of fake news".

Within minutes of the results on Sunday, a defeated Le Pen sounded the charge for the general election.

"The old parties are dying, or are already dead", Valls said.

One of the president-elect's immediate priorities is crucial parliamentary elections next month, in which he will look to secure a working majority. "I will be a candidate in the presidential majority and I wish to join up to his movement, the Republic on the Move". The National Front retains its strong association with the anti-Semitism of the collaborationist Vichy regime of World War II; Le Pen's anti-Islam, anti-EU positions were widely read as updated versions of dark and shameful themes.

Moshe Kantor, president of the European Jewish Congress president heralded Macron's victory as a "vote for France, for the European Union and for democratic values". Given Macron's pro-EU stance, his victory has likely assuaged many fears in the markets about the potential for a French exit from the European Union, something favoured by Le Pen. Le Pen's campaign advisers say the National Front is now the "primary opposition party in the country". The centre-left Socialists and centre-right Republicans, both of which were trounced in the elections, are divided on whether they are willing to work with Macron, and the hard left remains implacably opposed to him.

Though we're entering into the last leg of the thus-far-auccessful Q1 earnings season, we've still got plenty of companies scheduled to report this week.
